  • Last week I waxed poetic about the Hollywood film industry and its blatant double standards.
  • The self-proclaimed hotbed of progressive liberalism where greed, sexism, bullying and the exaltation of gun violence is the order of the day.
  • Granted, we ad people might not have the highest moral cred to point fingers when it comes to hypocrisy.
  • In the ad biz we’re all staunchly anti-tobacco until Philip Morris sends us an RFP.
  • Our principles are malleable to say the least.
  • In any case, let’s move west of Madison Avenue and north of the Hollywood hills.
  • Welcome to Silicon Valley.
  • A few weeks back at the Multicultural ANA event in Miami, Luke Visconti, CEO of Diversity inc, had some harsh words for Google and its penchant to incur in serious levels of hypocrisy in matters such as diversity, glass ceiling and equal pay.
  • If you ask me, that’s hardly the only field where Silicon Valley shows an alarming hypocrisy quotient.
  • Imagine for a second that you own and operate, say, a restaurant.
  • You know that there are prostitutes male and female soliciting within the confines of your establishment.
  • Not only are you aware of it but you also collect a commish everytime a sexual transaction is arranged on your premises.
  • It is safe to say that you are an accomplice, right?
  • Now let’s imagine that you own and operate a search engine.
  • You are fully aware that thousands if not millions of pornographic videos are funneled through your digital grid.
  • Not only that, you collect a commission from said traffic too.
  • It is safe to say that you are an accomplice, right?
  • I know, I know.
  • Free speech, the age of consent, blah blah blah blah.
  • A few questions though:
  • Why isn’t Google’s search engine set in safe mode by default?
  • I mean, why do I have to dig deep in the intricacies of a mobile phone’s settings to prevent my or my kid’s phone to spew hardcore pornography and assorted inappropriate content on a query?
  • To be sure, the Googlers are one smart bunch and they have duly furnished their various services with carefully worded disclaimers and plenty legal mumbo jumbo to cover their rear ends.
  • Plus, porn is one slippery topic to discuss.
  • I tend to believe that pornography is prostitution on tape.
  • In other words, exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
  • Many feminists, however, bend over backwards to see the glass half full claiming that porn is one of the few industries where females get paid more than males for the same job.
  • Well, I guess that if you are going to partake of what’s pretty much a rape reenactment in the presence of an entire film crew for the masses to enjoy in the privacy of their homes or offices, well, you’d better be paid accordingly.
  • Hey, it’s only sex!
  • We are mammals, we’ve been doing it for eons!
  • Don’t be such a prude!
  • They are sexual workers, they are making a living doing what they are good at, just like a soccer player!
  • What are you, a choir boy or something?
  • What age are you living in?
  • C’mon, Larry Flint sorted out this issue with the Supreme Court a long time ago!
  • Hugh Hefner died last month pretty much lauded as a high priest of taste & savoir faire!
  • Quit being so condescending and paternalistic!
  • They are grownups, they are enjoying it, it is consensual!
  • Are they?
  • Is it?
  • Really?
  • Ok.
