Telemundo partners with Excelencia in Education

As part of the yearlong national pro-social campaign Aprender es Triunfar (Learning is Succeeding), Telemundo announced a partnership with Excelencia in Education, America’s premier organization focused on accelerating Latino success in higher education, together with Comcast NBCUniversal, to expand the organization’s commitment to the Hispanic community.  In addition, Telemundo has partnered with the Smithsonian Latino Center for a national outreach effort to promote STEAM education for Latino youth.  The Aprender es Triunfar (Learning is Succeeding) initiative is aimed at encouraging students to pursue education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) and seeks to provide useful tools and resources to empower U.S. Hispanic families.

In conjunction with the partnerships, Telemundo announced the launch of the digital platform for the Aprender es Triunfar (Learning is Succeeding) campaign, available in Spanishand English.  The website contains tools and resources for students and families, dedicated content for each of the topic areas, such as Mathematics and Science, as well as a news feed curated from third-party sources. Additionally, users can stay up to date and connect via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LearnSteam.

The partnership with Excelencia in Education will feature the launch of several co-branded white papers, including “Latinas in STEAM” tied to Women’s History Month in March 2015, and a major fact book co-branded with Aprender es Triunfar/Learning is Succeeding, which includes research and statistics on the current state of Latinos in education.  In addition, there will be specific outreach to encourage institutions that offer degrees in STEAM education to nominate their top programs for “Examples of Excelencia,” which is the only national initiative to identify and promote programs and departments at the forefront of advancing educational achievement for Latino students in higher education.  A call for nominations begins the first week of February.

“We are honored to partner with one of the most renowned non-profit Hispanic organizations Excelencia in Education, as well as with the Smithsonian Latino Center as we launch the Aprender es Triunfar digital platform, promoting STEAM education for Latino youth,” said Raquel Egusquiza, Vice President, Community Affairs, Hispanic Enterprises and Content, NBCUniversal.  “We are dedicated to providing Hispanics with the best information about education in the science, technology, engineering, arts and math fields as we work towards increasing Hispanic representation in those career fields.

“We are pleased to partner with Comcast, NBCUniversal and Telemundo on this important effort, and we commend them for their commitment to advance greater achievement in higher education for Latino students,” said Sarita Brown, President of Excelencia in Education. “Through our research, collaborations, and networks of results-oriented educators and policymakers, we are strengthening America’s future by helping more Latinos bring their full talents and energy to a transforming economy. This new partnership will amplify that work.”

The Smithsonian Latino Center partnership will promote STEAM education with a focus on Latino youth and families through the Center’s ¡Descubra! Meet the Science Expert series, which will launch nationally in three cities and culminate at the 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month Family Day at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C.  This series will showcase career paths and STEAM areas of interest via: 1) Latino role models who serve as featured ¡Descubra! speakers 2) family activities that highlight the work of collaborating and STEAM supporting organizations, and 3) ¡Descubra! Create It hands-on activities co-created by the Center and featured speakers. These activities will also be available online as downloadable bilingual resources.

“We are very pleased to be collaborating with Telemundo on the Aprender es Triunfar initiative, and thankful to Telemundo for supporting efforts to extend the reach of our ¡Descubra! series as an integral part of it all,” notes Eduardo Díaz, Director of the Smithsonian Latino Center. “We have made a concerted effort to diversify and expand our STEAM-related programs. This new partnership allows us to take them to a whole new level.”

For the yearlong campaign, Telemundo has partnered with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), ¡Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), distributed thousands of backpacks to students in key Hispanic markets, hosted an education town hall meeting at NCLR’s Annual Conference and released the documentary film, Underwater Dreams in Los Angeles and New York.  The network will begin airing monthly news segments on “Noticiero Telemundo” that profile prominent Hispanics who have succeeded in a STEAM field and public service announcements featuring “Noticiero Telemundo” anchor Jose Diaz-Balart and reporter Vanessa Hauc, directed to parents, to empower Hispanics to take advantage of the available resources for the Latino youth and increase awareness of career opportunities in the various STEAM fields.
