ArtesMiami President Aida Levitan, Ph.D. joins Smithsonian Latino Center National Board.

ArtesMiami announces that the Smithsonian Latino Center has named three new members to its national board of directors. They are Aida Levitan, Ph.D., President of ArtesMiami, Inc., a Miami-based 501(c)3 organization; Christine Ortega of Southwest Airlines and Philip Fuentes of PMAMCD Inc.

The Smithsonian National Latino Board is the Latino Center’s volunteer advisory arm. Its members are philanthropists, corporate leaders and accomplished individuals who bring experience, geographical balance, diverse backgrounds and culture expertise to the Latino Center. They advise the director on programming and external relations, assist with outreach and advocacy, and identify and secure financial support.

Levitan said, “This is the a very important board for me because it will help me honor U.S. Hispanics by supporting the Smithsonian Latino Center.   I am committed to contributing to the Center, starting with an ArtesMiami sponsorship of the upcoming “Cerámicas de los Ancestros” exhibition, scheduled to open at the American Indian Museum on March 29th, 2013.”  She added, “I also hope to help create a Smithsonian Latino Gallery at the Arts & Industry Building, as a precursor to a national Smithsonian American Latino Museum.”

The organization that Levitan presides, ArtesMiami Inc., supports and promotes Hispanic artists and cultural organizations. Formerly, she was president of Bromley Communications, then the number one Hispanic marketing communications company in the U.S. and president of the national Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies.  She was also a member of the National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL) Commission, and in 2011 was named Latina Pioneer of the Year by the Hispanic Women of Distinction Charity of South Florida.  Levitan is a member of the boards of the Miami Art Museum, the NMAL Friends, and CCEMiami.  She also chairs the Aetna Latino Advisory Council.  She received a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from Emory University.
