Hispanic Leaders Address Issues Facing Hispanic Community.

Hispanic elected officials met with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) at its 12th Annual Legislative Conference. They addressed numerous issues regarding the economic development agenda for Hispanic businesses.

“The purpose of this assembly was to develop a blueprint in which Hispanics can work together to move forward an agenda that empowers our community,” said George Herrera, USHCC President and CEO.

Attendees included Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) leaders:

Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Congressman Ciro Rodriguez, (D-TX),and Congressman Joe Baca (D-CA). Members of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) including, State Representatives John Martinez (CT), John Aguilara (ID), along with State Senator Efrain Gonzalez, Jr. (NY) were also in attendance. In addition, leaders of the USHCC, Elizabeth Lisboa-Farrow, USHCC Board Chair, J.R. Gonzales, USHCC Vice-Chair, Tina Cordova, USHCC Chair, Legislative Committee, George Herrera, USHCC President and CEO, and David Lizaraga, USHCC Board member also participated.

Some of the issues discussed were developing an economic development agenda, initiating financial campaigns for elected officials and making sure that Latinos get elected. Congressman Joe Baca (D-CA) commented on the need for more Hispanics on corporate boards, more Latina CEOs and more Hispanic lobbyists. “If Hispanics are not at the table, Hispanic decisions are not being made,” said Baca. “We are ready to work together and move forward,” said Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX).
