Social Networking now accounts for largest share of Online Minutes in Mexico.

ComScore, Inc. released a report on the top online properties and activities in Mexico from its comScore Media Metrix service. The report showed that Google Sites led as the most-visited Internet property in the market reaching more than 90 percent of all online users, followed by Microsoft Sites and Facebook.com. The study also found that Social Networking now ranks as the most popular online category by total minutes, accounting for nearly 30 percent of all time spent online during July. These findings and others will be presented via a live webinar, The State of the Internet in Mexico, on August 30.

In July, more than 23 million people age 6 and older visited an online destination from a home or work location, an increase of 22 percent from the previous year as Mexico’s Internet population continues to grow rapidly. Google Sites ranked as the top online property in the market, reaching 21.7 million visitors, or 93.4 percent of all Internet users. Microsoft Sites ranked second with 19.8 million people (85.0 percent reach), while Facebook.com ranked third with 19 million visitors (81.8 percent reach) as the social networking leader saw its audience grow 54 percent in the past year.

Social Networking Eclipses Portals as Top Category by Time Spent

An analysis of how Internet users in Mexico spend their time online revealed that Social Networking now leads all categories based on total minutes, accounting for 28.6 percent of time spent online in July – up from 12.8 percent a year ago. Portals accounted for 27.6 percent of time spent, followed by Instant Messengers with 16.5 percent. Mexicans’ affinity for entertainment content resulted in 14.2 percent of online minutes spent on Entertainment sites, while E-mail rounded out the top five with 6.9 percent share of minutes.
