Premio Lo Nuestro Adds 13 New Categories.

In its on-going drive to continue strengthening the already significant influence of the nation’s longest-standing and most successful Latin music awards, Spanish-language Univision Network announced the addition of 13 new categories to its annual Premio Lo Nuestro A La Música Latina. The event will air live, from Miami’s James L. Knight Convention Center, Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, 8-11 pm/7-10 pm Central.

For the first time ever, the 13th Premio Lo Nuestro will recognize excellence in the area of Latin Rock, a musical genre that has been gaining in popularity throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Two awards will debut in that category: Best Album and Best Performance.

New awards also will be given for Best Ranchera Performance, Best Grupera Performance, Best Tejana Performance, Best Norteña Performance, Best Merengue Performance, Best Salsa Performance, Best Traditional Music Performance and Best Mexican Band, the show’s producers revealed.

Although produced by Univision, Premio Lo Nuestro winners are chosen independently by Hispanic radio programmers from around the country. Beginning this January, viewers also will have a say in how some awards are given. By either calling a soon-to-be-set-up toll-free number or visiting the network’s recently launched website, Univision.com, fans will be allowed to vote for their favorite Pop, Tropical and Mexican Regional artists.
