Jan-25-2005

Telemundo 47 will focus on the blood crisis among tri-state area Hispanics with a series of special reports airing throughout the day on the station’s 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Anchors Jorge Ramos, Natalia Cruz, Madelyn Vega and Pedro Luis García will file a series of reports focusing on the blood shortage crisis in our area. The station will provide information on how to become a donor and will also feature interviews with people whose lives were saved by volunteer blood donors.

“We are very proud to take part in this initiative that urges the Hispanic community to donate blood,” said WNJU’s Vice President and General Manager Manuel Martínez-Llorián. “We hope that through the power of media and the power of this message, we can help educate our viewers and dissipate some of the myths and misconceptions associated with blood donation,” he added.

In addition, Telemundo 47 will partner with New York Blood Services to host three simultaneous blood drives on Saturday, January 29th from 11:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. WNJU’s health reporter, Dr. Manny Alvarez will make appearances at each of the drives. All potential donors will receive free mini medical exams, gift bags and refreshments and will have the opportunity to join the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry and learn about organ donation.

New York Blood Services is a non-profit community based blood center established 41 years ago to supply life-saving transfusion products and services for patients in close to 200 New York and New Jersey Hospitals.

The locations are:

·Hostos Community College, 500 Grand Concourse, Building C Room #391 in the Bronx.
·The Presbyterian Fort-George Church, 1525 St. Nicholas Avenue in Manhattan.
· Pop Morgan Building, 6300 Meadowview in North Bergen, New Jersey.

To donate blood, the donor needs to be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good health and not have donated within the past 56 days. For further information, viewers can contact New York Blood Services at 1800- 933- BLOOD or go to http://www.nybloodcenter.org
