How Quickly Do Users Reach for Their Smartphones After Waking Up?

In emerging and developed markets alike, almost all consumers check their mobile devices within 3 hours of waking up, research revealed. There are some, though, who reach for their device immediately—and that’s more common in the less developed world.

The data, which is part of Deloitte’s “Global Mobile Consumer Survey” of 49,500 internet users across 31 countries and 6 continents, found that globally, most consumers check their phones within the same general timeframe. And, interestingly, most don’t reach for their smartphone immediately after waking up. For example, just 24% of those in emerging markets check their handset right away, along with 11% of those in developed markets.

With the timeframe broadened from “immediately” to within 5 minutes, nearly half of respondents in emerging markets checked their smartphone, along with almost a third of smartphone users in developed markets.

Once they do reach for their devices, many consumers—both in emerging and developed markets—check texts and instant messages first. Indeed, more than a third of respondents in both areas do so.

Some 19% of users in developed markets said they check their emails first thing each day, and 11% of respondents in emerging markets did so as well. In addition, thought 22% of smartphone users in emerging markets said they checked social media first, only 10% of respondents in developed markets did so first thing every day.
