A new national "umbrella group" for Hispanic/Latino service charities, The Hispanic United Fund, will make its debut later this month in the U.S. government's worldwide workplace charity fund drive, the Combined Federal Campaign.

This is the first time Hispanic/Latino charities have had their own distinct category listing in the federal campaign, or in any other national workplace fund drive for that matter.

Many corporations and other employers join the U.S. government in holding workplace-based fund drives during the traditional fall giving season.

Contributors in many of those fund drives also have the opportunity to direct their gifts to specific charities, and Fund officials are scrambling to get out the word to Hispanic professional, civic, and fraternal organizations that the Hispanic United Fund is now a giving option.

The Fund represents Hispanic/Latino charities exclusively, including the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Amigos de las Americas, Los Ninos International Aid and Adoption Center, the National Latina Health Organization, and fourteen other national and international charities. The Combined Federal Campaign is the largest at-work fund drive in the world, reaching more than four million federal, postal, and military employees and raising $220 million annually. Federal employees may make cash or payroll deduction contributions to the charity or charities of their choice from among those approved for participation by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

That federal agency certified the Fund after reviewing its application earlier this year. Historically, certification and approval for soliciting federal employees and military personnel has proven to be advantageous for charity umbrella groups seeking credibility with contributors, as the federal standards for admission are stringent.
