Airline Tickets Most Purchased Items On The Net.

Airline tickets now consistently rank among the top five most purchased items on the Internet, according to Greenfield Online’s latest Digital Consumer Shopping Index. While low-cost items like books and CDs still are at the top of the list, surveys of 3,000 Net-savvy consumers in three of the last four quarters have placed airline tickets among the top five most purchased items.

Holiday toy purchasing pushed airline tickets to sixth in the fourth quarter of 2000, but in the first quarter of 2001 airline tickets ranked fifth. Tables that follow show online purchasing behaviors:

Comparisons of Total Online Purchasing Over Time Online Activity/Purchased Something Q1 2001=70%, Q4 2000=72%, Q1 2000=70%

In the first quarter, higher income consumers purchased more online than those with incomes under $50,000. Over 80 percent of those with incomes above $75,000 had purchased something online within the first quarter. Women continued to purchase online at a slightly higher rate than men (71 percent vs. 69 percent) for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Top Five Purchased Categories
This quarter toys and games, which had been fourth in our pre-Christmas survey, did not even place in the top ten most purchased items. Clothing and airline tickets, ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, a year ago and have been moving up ever since.
