During the past five years Puerto Rico has witnessed a dramatic change in the means by which members of Puerto Rico's 1.4 million households communicate. Once the dominant means, landline telecommunications, including voice services provided by cable TV, have given way to the wireless cellular communications. With 71% of Puerto Rico homes having one or more wireless phone users, the utility value of a landline telephone has diminished.
